Communication software offered a whole new range of signals on which we base our intimate relationships with others. These relationships are now negotiated through second-degree notifications sent to us through technology, and mediated through the platform. Before technology these emotions would have been mediated to us by eye contact, touch, nodding, or other human feedback loops, and are now replaced by automated notifications of all kinds.
